The United States has alwaysbeen a country of many cultures. Before Europeans came to North America, many groupsof Native Americans lived here. Different Native American groups had differentcultures. The first Europeans in the United States were from England andHolland, but immigrants came from all European countries. Many people alsoimmigrated from Asia and Africa. Sadly, many Africans were brought to theUnited States as slaves. Many immigrants come from Latin America too. Today, the United States has people from more cultures than ever.
In the 19th century, peoplespoke of the United States as a “melting pot.” People thought that allimmigrates should forget their native cultures and languages and becomeEnglish-speaking Americans. They felt that people should assimilate-joinAmerican culture. However, not everyone wanted to assimilate completely. Manypeople tried to keep parts of their cultures, such as foods, customs, andlanguages. However, their children often forgot their parents’ or grandparents’language. But most Americans, even those whose families have been here a longtime, can tell the countries their relatives came from. And of course, newimmigrants take great pride in their curare and language.
For all of these reasons, melting pot is no longer a good way to describe the United States. Instead, people now call the United States a “salad bowl.” They say salad bowl becausein a salad, you can still see all of the individual parts (lettuce, tomato, andso on), but all the different parts mixed together and begin to take on theflavor of one another.

Failure is probably the mostexhausting experience a person ever has. There is nothing more tiring than notsucceeding.
We experience this tiredness intwo ways: as start-up fatigue (疲惫) and performance fatigue. In the former case,we keep putting off a task because it has either too boring or too difficult. And the longer we delay it, the more tired we feel.
Such start-up fatigue is veryreal, even if not actually physical, not something in our muscles and bones. The solution is obvious though perhaps not easy to apply: always handle themost difficult job first.
Years ago, I was asked to write102 essays on the great ideas of some famous authors. Applying my own rule, Idetermined to write them in alphabetical order, never letting myself leave outa tough idea. And I always started the day’s work with the difficult task ofessay-writing. Experience proved that the rule works.
Performance fatigue is moredifficult to handle. Though willing to get started, we cannot seem to do thejob right. Its difficulties appear so great that, however hard we work, we failagain and again. In such a situation, I work as hard as I can—then let theunconscious take over.
When planning Encyclopedia Britannica( 《大英百科全书》), I had tocreate a table of contents based on the topics of its articles. Nothing likethis had ever been done before, and day after day I kept coming up withsolutions, but none of them worked. My fatigue became almost unbearable.
One day, mentally exhausted, Iwrote down all the reasons why this problem could not be solved. I tried toconvince myself that the trouble was with the problem itself, not with me.Relived, I sat back in an easy chair and fell asleep.
An hour later, I woke up suddenlywith the solution clearly in mind. In the weeks that followed, the solutionwhich had come up in my unconscious mind proved correct at every step. Though Iworked as hard as before, I felt no fatigue. Success was now as exciting asfailure had been depressing.
Human beings, I believe, must try to succeed.Success, then, means never feeling tired.
(1)People withstart-up fatigue are most likely to .
A. workhard B. delaytasks C. seekhelp D. acceptfailure
(2)On whatoccasion does a person probably suffer from performance fatigue?
A. Beforestarting a difficulttask. B. Afterfinding a way out.
C. If the job is ratherboring. D. Whenall the solutions fail.
(3)According tothe author, the unconscious mind may help us .
A. findthe rightsolution B. getsome nice sleep
C. gain completerelief D. ignoremental problems
(4)What could bethe best title for the passage?
A. SuccessIs Built uponFailure B. Howto Handle Performance Fatigue
C. Getting over Fatigue: A Way toSuccess D. Fatigue:An Early Sign of Health Problems
