You’re busy filling out the application form fora position you really need; let’s assume you once actually completed a coupleof years of college work or even that you completed your degree. Isn’t it highlyattractive to lie just a little, to claim on the form that your diplomarepresents a Harvard degree? Or that you finished an extra couple of years backat
More and more people are turning to completedeception like this to land their job or to move ahead in their careers, forpersonnel officers, like most Americans, value degrees from famous schools. Ajob applicant may have a good education anyway, but he or she assumes thatchances of being hired are better with a diploma from a well-known university.Registrars at most well-known colleges say they deal with deceitful claims likethese at the rate of about one per week.
Personnel officers do check up on degrees listedon application forms, then. If it turns out that an applicant lying, mostcolleges are unwilling to accuse the applicant directly. One Ivy League schoolcalls them impostors(骗子); another refers to them as special cases. Onewell-known West Coast school, in perhaps the most delicate phrase of all, saysthat these claims are made by no such people.
To avoid outright(彻底的)lies, somejob-seekers claim that they attended or were associated with a college oruniversity. After carefully checking, a personnel officer may discover thatattending means being dismissed after one semester. It may be that beingassociated with a college means that the job-seeker visited his younger brotherfor a football weekend.
If you don’t want to lie or even stretch the truth, there arecompanies that will sell you a phony(假的)diploma. Onecompany will put your name on a diploma from any number of non-existentcolleges. The price begins at twenty dollars for a diploma, which seems ratherhigh for one sheet of paper.
Job seekers’ lying is a social phenomenon, andtherefore, the whole society should take its responsibility to deal with theproblem.

Writing a funny speech is possibly a lot harder than writing aserious-minded one. Are you up for it? Well, if you think you are, try thesesteps.
Choosea funny topic. Ask your partner, friends, etc., ifthey agree with you that you have chosen a funny topic. Nothing is less funnythan choosing a topic that only satisfies your sense of humor but not anybodyelse’s. If you can’t think of a funny topic, choose one on an everydayactivity. 36
Research your topic. If you can’t think of enough witticisms (妙语) of your own, go online and hunt down other people’s. 37 But if you’re performing in public, be sure toacknowledge others’ or to paraphrase (改写) itso that you are not copying.
Writein a humorous way. 38 Don’t choose unclear references. Choosesomething that everyone is bound to know and understand. Naturally, this willdepend on the make-up of those listening to your speech. Make jokes about yourtopic; that way, everyone will understand, unless the audience has a horriblesense of humor.
39 If they don’t laugh, thismight be a sign to rewrite your speech. Get a good listener. Someone who is alot like the majority of your audience would be a good listener, because youwill know exactly what to say to make them laugh.
Havefun! If you go up to give your speech and you’re shaky and nervousbecause you don’t think anyone will laugh, everyone will be more focused onterrifying you than listening to your speech. 40 Chances are that you’ll never have to speak infront of them again.
A. Ask your listeners tocome back.
B. Humor works best when everyone “gets it.”
C. Just have a good time giving the speech and don’tmind your audience.
D. That way, you can push the boundaries and makeit amusing.
E. People do get stage frights, but if you’reconfident, then everything will go just fine.
F. Read your speech out tosomeone trusted before giving it
G. If you’re at a privateparty, you won’t need to be too concerned about using other people’s materials.
