Shynessis the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people areanxious and self-conscious; that is, they are over concerned with their ownappearance and actions.Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: what kind ofimpression am I making? Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearingunattractive clothes?

It is obvious thatsuch uncomfortable feelings must affect people unfavorably. A person’sself-concept is reflected in the way he or she behaves and the way a personbehaves affects other people’s reactions. In general, the way people thinkabout themselves has a deep effect on all areas of their lives. Shy people ,whohave low self-esteem(自尊),are likely to bepassive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance(安慰)thatthey are doing “the right thing”. Shy people are very sensitive to criticism. It makes them feel inferior(自卑).They also find itdifficult to be pleased by praises because they believe they are unworthy ofpraise .A shy person may respond to a praise with a statement like this one:”You’re just saying that to make me feel good .I know it’s not true.” It isclear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful. Can shyness be completely got rid of ,or at least reduced? Fortunately, peoplecan overcome shyness with determination. It is important for people to accepttheir weaknesses as well as their strengths, for example, not fair for them tolabel themselves inferior because they have to be realistic. If Confucius(孔子)were still alive today and could celebrate hisSeptember 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’dneed a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.

While many people in China will remember Confucius on thisspecial day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’snothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their ownnational heroes.

But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care aboutConfucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross ifthey want to reach a deeper understanding of China.

In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained hugepopularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government hasset up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach bothChinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usuallyincluded Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学).Some socialscientists suggest that Westerners should take advantages of the ancientChinese  wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Westerners philosophy.Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. Sothey will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power withthe United States. Businessmen  who hope to make money in China arereading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.

So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well.

Every animal sleeps, but the reason for thishas remained foggy. When lab rats are not allowed to sleep, they die within amonth.   71

One idea is that sleep helpsus strengthen new memories.   72    We know that, while awake, fresh memories are recorded by reinforcing (加强) connections between brain cells, but thememory processes that take place while we sleep have been unclear.

Support is growing for atheory that sleep evolved so that connections between neurons(神经元) in the brain can be weakened overnight, making room for fresh memories to form the next day.   73

Now we have the most direct evidence yet thathe is right.   74   The synapses in the mice takenat the end of a period of sleep were 18 percent smaller than those taken beforesleep, showing that the connections between neurons weaken while sleeping.

If Tononi’s theory is right, it would explainwhy, when we miss a night’s sleep, we findit harder the next day to concentrate and learn new information — our brainsmay have smaller room for new experiences.

Their research also suggests how we may buildlasting memories over time even though the synapses become thinner. The teamdiscovered that some synapses seem to be protected and stayed the samesize.      75   “You keep whatmatters,” Tononi says.

A. We should also try to sleep well the nightbefore.

B. It’s as if the brain is preserving its mostimportant memories.

C. Similarly, when people go for a few dayswithout sleeping, they get sick.

D. The processes take place to stop our brainsbecoming loaded with memories.

E. That’s why students do better in tests ifthey get a chance to sleep after learning.

F. “Sleep is the price we pay for learning,”says Giulio Tononi, who developed the idea.

G. Tononi’s team measured the size of theseconnections, or synapses, in the brains of 12 mice.

书面表达:

Good morning, everyone,

My topic today is how to live alow-carbon life. As we all know, the earth is becoming warmer and warmer due tothe global climate change. Many people may think that low-carbon life is faraway from us. However, every one of us can reduce our daily carbon emissions bydoing something.

Firstly, changing our previous livinghabit of wasting things is the first step. We can use energy-saving electricitylights instead of the traditional lights, and turn them off when we dont use them. Never leave thewater running when we dont use it. When we need to contact someone , its better to send an e-mail thanuse paper to write letters.

Use the public transport or ride yourbicycle instead of driving private cars when we travel somewhere. Even if wehave to drive, wedbetter plan it well in advance to avoid wasting fuel.

It is believed that the global climatechange is due to the human activities. Only if we know what we do in our dailylife and live a low-carbon life can we make a difference.
