When we think ofleadership, we often think of strength and power. But what are these really, and how do they operate?

Leadershiptoday is not about forcing others to do things. If this is even possible, it isshort-term, and tends to backfire. If you order someone to do something againsttheir will, they may do it because they feel they must, but the anger they feelwill do more harm in the long-term, They will also experience fear.

Fearcauses the thinking brain to shut down, making the person unable to function athis or her best. If they associate you with this emotionof fear. They will become less functional around you, and you will havesucceeded in not only shooting yourself in the foot, but possibly making a verygood employee or partner unable to perform effectively. Fear has no place inleadership.

Theway we influence people in a lasting way is by our own character, and ourunderstanding and use of emotion. We can order someone to do something, whichmay be part of the work day; or we can employ them at the emotional level, sothey became fully devoted to the projects and provide some of their ownmotivation (积极性).Today’s work place is all about relationships.

Anyoneworks harder in a positive environment in which they are recognized and valuedas a human being as well as a worker. Everyone produces just a bit more forsomeone they like. Leaders understand the way things work. They know the paycheck is not the single most motivating factor (因素) in the work life ofmost people.

Thetrue strength of leadership is an inner strength that comes from the confidenceof emotional intelligence—knowing your own emotions, and how to handle them, and those of others. Developing your emotional intelligence is the single bestthing you can do if you wantto develop your relationships with people around you, which is the key to theleadership skills.

29.An employee may have a feeling of fearin the work place when ________.

A. he is forced to do thing                    B.he cannot work at his best

C. he feels his brain shut down                    D.he thinks of his work as too heavy

30.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. People tend to associate leadership with fear.

B. Working conditions affect people’s physicalhealth.

C. Good relationship is the key to business success.

D. Smart people are more functional in the workplace.

31.To positively influence employees a leader should first of all ________.

A. provide better suggestions B. develop his ownpersonality

C. give his employees a pay rise     D.hide his own emotion of fear

32.Good leadership is mainly seen in a leader’s ability to ________.

A. provide a good working environment[来源:学§科§网]

B. help raise employee’s living standards

C. give employees specific instructions

D. deal wisely with employees’ emotions

                        D

A few yearsago I had an "aha!" moment regarding handwriting.

I had in myhand a sheet of paper with handwritten instructions on it for some sort ofeditorial task. It occurred at first that I did not recognize the handwriting, and then I realized whose it must be. I finally became aware of the fact that Ihad been working with this colleague for at least a year, maybe two, and yet I did not recognize her handwriting at that point.

It was avery important event in the computerization of life—a sign that the informal, friendly communication of people working together in an office had changed fromnotes in pen to instant messages and emails. There was a time when our workdayswere filled with little letters, and we recognized one another’s handwritingthe way we knew voices or faces.

As a childvisiting my father’s office, I was pleased to recognize, in little notes on thedesks of his staff, the same handwriting I would see at home in the notes hewould leave on the fridge—except that those notes were signed “dad” instead of“RFW”.

All this hasbeen on my mind because of the talk about The Rise and Fall of Handwriting,a book by Florey. She shows in her book a deep concern about the fall ofhandwriting and the failure of schools to teach children to write wellbut many others argue that people in adigital age can’t be expected to learn to hold a pen.

    I don’t buyit.

I don’t wantto see anyone cut off from the expressive, personal associations that a penstill promotes better than a digital keyboard does. For many a biographer, partof really getting to know their subjects is learning to read their handwriting.

What somepeople advocate is teaching one of the many attractive handwritings based onthe handwriting of 16th-century Italy. That may sound impossiblygrand—as if they want kids to learn to draw by copying classical paintings. However, they have worked in many school systems.

33. Why was the authorsurprised at not recognizing his colleague’s handwriting?

   A. He had workedwith his colleague long enough.

   B. His colleague’shandwriting was so beautiful.

   C. His colleague’shandwriting was so terrible.

   D. He still had a1ot of work to do.

34. The author’s father wrotenotes in pen ________.

   A. to both hisfamily and his staff

   B. to his familyin small letters

   C. to his familyon the fridge

   D. to his staff onthe desk

35. According to the author,handwritten notes ________.

   A. are harder toteach in schools

   B. attract moreattention

   C. are used onlybetween friends

   D. carry moremessage

第二节( 5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。,选项中有两项为多余选项。

LastSunday I was thinking about the difference between successful people and thosewho don’t achieve anything significant. I made an interesting discovery. Thisdifference may at first look obvious, but it’s quite opposite.   36

Everyonehas a purpose behind their actions. If they don’t, they wouldn’t take action!   37When they take action, at the back of their minds they think about successthat this action is going to bring them.

38   What’sthe purpose behind your actions? Do you work to thrive(成功)or to survive?Do you go to work to feed your family or to create an amazing lifestyle?

Differentpurposes will result in completely different life experiences. People who workto survive are the ones who fear that some unexpected bill will arrive. They goto bed worrying about money and unimportant things. They hate their employmentbut don’t quit because they doubt their own abilities to create somethinggreater. I know this kind of feeling because I was like that once. That’s avery uncomfortable state to be in because you are constantly worried aboutinsignificant things.   39   Therefore, you cannotachieve anything great.

Now there aresome people who don’t accept the "Life is hard" story and they arefuelled by an entirely different purpose. They work to thrive.   40  They have a beautiful vision and they take constant action to makethat vision a reality.

A. And theydon’t thinkabout why something cannot be done.

B. Such attitudeinvites great opportunities to you.[来源:学科网]

C. It lies inwhat motivates people to take action.

D. So let me askyou a few questions.

E. And thismakes you take even more or better quality actions.

F. This statedoes not allow you to be creative

G. But successful people have a completely differentpurpose behind the actions they take.

Were you the first or the last child in your family? Or were you a middle or anonly child? Some people think       61     matters where you were born in your family. But there are different ideasabout       62      thebirth order means. Some people say that the oldest children,    63     are smart and strong-willed, are very likely      64       (succeed). The reason      65      this is simple. Parents have a lot of timefor their first child and give him or her a lot of attention. An only childwill succeed for       66     same reason.
What happens to the otherchildren in the family? Middle children don’t get so much attention, so theydon’t feel that important. If a family has many children, the middle onesometimes gets lost in the crowd. The youngest child, however, often getsspecial       67     (treat), growing up to be funny. But a recent study thought things quite      68      (difference). The study found that firstchildren believed in family rules. They didn’t take many chances in      69           lives.
