第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(ABCD)中,选出最佳选项。

                                      A

Walking down a path through some woods in Georgia, I saw a small pool of water ahead on the path. I changed my direction to go aroundit on the part of the path that wasn’t covered by water or mud. As I reachedthe pool, I was suddenly attacked! Yet I did nothing for the attack. It was sounpredictable and from somewhere totally unexpected. I was surprised as well asunhurt though I had been struck four or five times. I backed up a foot and myattacker stopped attacking me. Had I been hurt, I wouldn’t have found it amusing. And I was laughing. After all, I was being attacked by a butterfly!

Having stopped, laughing, I took a stepforward. My attacker rushed me again. He charged towards me at full speed, attempting to hurt me but in vain. For a second time, I took a step backwardswhile my attacker paused. I wasn’t sure what to do. After all, it’s just notevery day that one is attacked by a butterfly. I stepped back to look thesituation over. My attacker moved back to land on the ground. That’s when Idiscovered why my attacker was charging at me only moments earlier. He had a mateand she was dying.

Sitting close beside her, he opened andclosed his wings as if to fan her. I could only admire the love and courage ofthat butterfly in his concern for his mate. He had taken it up on himself toattack me for his mate’s sake, even though she was clearly dying and I was solarge. He did so just to give her those extra few precious moments of life. Hiscourage in attacking something thousands of times larger and heavier thanhimself just for his mate’s safety seemed admirable. I couldn’t do anythingother than reward him by walking on the more difficult side of the pool. He hadtruly earned those moments to be with her, undisturbed.

Since then, I’ve always tried to rememberthe courage of that butterfly whenever I see huge barriers facing me.

21. Why did the writer change his direction while walking down a path?

A. To get close to a butterfly.                B.To look the bad situation over.

C. To escape a sudden attack.                D.To avoid getting his shoes dirty.

Atfive o’clock, people leave their office. The length of the workday, for manyworkers, is defined by time. They leave when the clock tells them they’re done.

Thesedays, the time is everywhere: not just on clocks or watches, but on cell-phonesand computers. That may be a bad thing, particularly at work. New researchshows on that clock-based work schedules hinder (阻碍)creativity.

Clock-timersorganize their day by blocks of minutes and hours. For example: a meeting from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., research from 10 a.m. to noon, etc. On the other hand, task-timers have a list of things they want to accomplish. They work down the list, each task starts when the previous task iscompleted. It is said that all of us employ a mix of both these types ofplanning.

What, then, are the effects of thinking about time in these different ways? Does onemake us more productive? Better at the tasks at hand? Happier? In experimentsconducted by Tamar and Anne, they had participants organize differentactivities—from project planning, holiday shopping, to yoga—by time or to-dolist to measure how they performed under “clock time” vs. “task time”. Theyfound clock-timers to be more efficient but less happy because they felt littlecontrol over their lives. Task-timers are happier and more creative, but lessproductive. They tend to enjoy the moment when something good is happening, andseize opportunities that come up.

Theresearchers argue that task-based organizing tends to be undervalued andunder-supported in the business culture. Smart companies, they believes willtry to bake more task-basedplanning into their strategies. This might be a small change to the way we viewwork and the office, but the researchers argue that it challenges a widespreadcharacteristic of the economy: work organized by clock time. While most peoplewill still probably need, and be, to some extent, clock-timers, task-basedtiming should be used when performing a job that requires more creativity. It’ll make the tasks easier, and the task-doers will be happier.

28.What does the author think of time displayed everywhere

A. It makes everybody time-conscious.

B. It clearly indicates the fast pace of modernlife.

C. It is a convenience for work and life.

D. It may have a negative effect on creative work.

29.How do people usually go about their work according to the author?

A. They accomplish their tasks one by one.

B. They combine clock-based and task-based planning.

C. They set a time limit for each specific task.

D. They give priority to the most urgent task onhand.

30. What did theresearchers find in their experiments about clock-timers?

A.They tend to be more productive.             B.They have more control over their lives.

CThey always get their work done in time.    D. They seizeopportunities as they come up.

31.What do the researchers say about today’s business culture?

A. It does not support the strategies adopted bysmart companies.

B. It places more emphasis on work efficiency thanon workers’ lives,

C. It does not attach enough importance totask-based practice.

D. It aims to bring employees’ potential andcreativity into full play.

Your heart vs. Your mind

You watch a sad film and get caught up in your emotions. You cryyour eyes out at the dramatic plots—you feel sad for the characters if theysuffer, or happy for them when they are successful. It is only when the movieis over that you realize that what you were watching is not real.

But why couldn’t you accept that when you were so absorbed in themovie? It was reported in Science Daily this week that scientists at Case Western Reserve University, US, discovered that people simply cannot think emotionallyand logically at the same time.

It has long been known that something different goes on in our brainwhen we use logic, rather than responding to something emotionally. Thinking logically is astep-by-step process, in which people make decisions through reasoning and findanswers. When we think emotionally, we look at things from someone else’s pointof view and try to feel their pain.

Now scientists have found that thinking logically and emotionallyare like the two ends of a seesaw (跷跷板) when we’re busy thinking emotionally, the part of the brain usedfor cold, hard analysis is prevented. And it’s also true the other way round.

To come to this conclusion, scientists gathered 45 people—men andwomen—to take brain scans as they solved different kinds of puzzles. Some ofthe puzzles were tough and involved math and physics and others were socialproblems thatrequired participants to put themselves in other people’s shoes.

Scientists found that when participants were doing a math problem, the region in their brain that is associated with logical thinking lit up, andwhen asked to make emotional decisions, the region for emotional thinking litup. But the most interesting part is that when asked to solve problems thatrequired both logical and emotional responses, the participants always used oneof the regions at a time while the other one went dark.

“Emotional thinking and logical thinking are mutually (相互地) independent in the brain,”said Anthony Jack, leader of the study. “You don’t have to favor one, but cycleefficiently between them, and employ the right network at the right time.”

However, people sometimes ended up using the wrong one. Thisexplains why some people are good at solving complex math problems but havepoor social skills. And why even the smartest people get taken in by fake buttouching stories.

32Why does the author mentionwatching movies at the beginning of the article?

ATo tell us thatthe movies that we watch are not real.

BTo introduce theresearch findings from this experience.

CTo show that logicalthinking is much more important.

DTo prove to usthat the emotional thinking is powerful.

33Through their recent tests, scientists at Case Western Reserve University, US proved _____.

Alogical thinkingworks differently from emotional thinking

Blogical thinkingis much more efficient than emotional thinking

Clogical thinkingand emotional thinking take turns to function

Dlogical thinkingand emotional thinking could work together

34The underlined expression inParagraph 5 probably means ______.

Aput one’s foot inone’smouth             Bput on otherpeople’s shoes

Cplace oneself inothers’ position                  Dstand on one’s own feet

35We can conclude from the lasttwo paragraphs that ______.

Apeople can freelyswitch between different types of thinking

Badopting thewrong thinking method could have bad results

Cpeople could useboth logical thinking and emotional thinking

Dpeople who thinklogically could easily be taken in by stories

作文Dear Editor,

I’ma senior high school student. As we all know, in China many children inmountainous areas still can’t go to school because of poverty. Last week, ourclass held a discussion about how to help them to go to school and live a happychildhood. Here are our suggestions.

First, some old textbooks and clothes can be collected and sent tothose children so that they can be reused by them. Second, we students shouldsave some of our pocket money and give it to those needy children. They can usethis money to buy something they like. Above all, we should give them respect, never looking down upon them because they are poor.

We’ll really appreciateit if you can, through China Daily, increase public awareness of the poorchildren’s living conditions and call on more people and social organizationsto help them.

Best wishes,

                                                      Yours sincerely,

                                                         Li Hua
