I know what you’re thinking: pizza?Forbreakfast? But the truth is that you can have last night’s leftovers inthe a.m. if you want to. I know lots of women who skip breakfast (不吃早饭), andthey have a ton of different excuses for doing it. Some say they don’t havetime, others think they’re “saying” calories ,stillothers just don’t like breakfast food . But the bottom line is that eating in the morning is very important when you’retrying to lose weight . “Eating just about anything from 300 to 400 calorieswould be better than nothing at all,” says Katherine Brooking, R.D,who developed the super-easy eating plan for thisyear’s “SELF CHALLENGE”. And even pizza can be healthy if it’s loaded withvegetables, and you stick to one small piece. Breakfast is one meal I never miss, and the same goes for most weight losssuccess stories. Research shows that eating breakfast keeps you from overeatinglater in the day. Researchers at the University of Southern California foundthat breakfast skippers have a bigger chance of gaining weight than those whoregularly have a morning meal. So eat something in the morning, anything. I know plenty of friends who end uphaving no breakfast altogether, and have just coffee or orange juice. I say,try heating up last night’s leftovers – it may sound crazy, but if it works foryou, do it! I find if I tell myself, “You can always eat it tomorrow.” I putaway the leftovers instead of eating more that night. Try it … you may saveyourself some pre-bedtime calories. And watch your body gain the fat-burningeffects. 21.The word “leftovers” in paragraph I probably means ______. A. food remaining after a meal B.things left undone C. meals made ofvegetables D.pizza topped with fruit22.What can we infer from the text? A. Working women usually have breakfast in a hurry. B. Many people have wrong ideas about breakfast. C. There are some easy ways of cooking a meal. D. Eating vegetables helps save energy.23.According to the last paragraph, it is important to _______. A. eat something for breakfast B.be careful about what you eat C. heat up food before eatingit D. eatcalorie-controlled food24.The text is written mainlyfor those _______. A. who go to workearly B.who want to lose weight
C. who stay up late D.who eat before sleep

MONTREAL (Reuters) – Crossing the US-Canada border(边界)to go to church on a Sundaycost a US citizen $10,000for breaking Washington’s strict new security(安全)rules.
The expensive trip to church was a surprise for Richard Albert, wholives right on the Canadian border. Like the other half-dozen people ofTownship 15, crossing the border is a daily occurrence for Albert. The nearbyQuebec village of St. Pamphile is where they shop, eat and go to church.
There are many such situations in these areas along the largelyunguarded 5,530-mile border between Canada and the US which in some casesactually runs down the middle of streets or through buildings. As a result,Albert says he did not expect any problems three weeks ago when he returnedhome to the US after attending church in Canada, as usual. The US customs(海关)station in this area isclosed on Sundays, so be just drove around the locked gate, as he had doneevery weekend since the gate appeared last May, following a tightening of bordersecurity. Two days later, Albert was told to go to the customs office, where anofficer told him he had been caught on camera crossing the border illegally(非法).
Ottawa has given out special passes to some 300 US citizens in thatarea so they can enter the country when Canadian customs stations are closed, but the US stopped a similar program last May. That forces the people to a200-mile detour along hilly roads to get home through another bordercheckpoint.
Albert has requested that the customs office change their decisionson the fine, but he has not attended a Sunday church since. “I feel like I’mliving in a prison,” he said.

Transportation andcommunication networks bring people together. Yet sometimes people themselvescreate barriers(障碍) to transportation andcommunication. In some countries, laws stop people from moving freely fromplace to place. Over the centuries, many groups of people have been denied thefreedom to travel because of their race, religion, or nationality. In theMiddle Ages, for example, Jews were often forbidden to move about freely withincertain cities. South Africa’s government used to require black Africans tocarry passes when they travel within the country. Some governments require allcitizens to carry identification papers and to report to government officialswhenever they move.
Countries set up customs postsat their borders. Foreign travellers must go through a customs inspectionbefore they are allowed to travel in the country. Usually travellers have tocarry special papers such as passports and visas(签证). Some countries even limit the number of visitors to theircountry each year. Others allow tourists to visit only certain areas ofthe country, or they may require that travellers be with an official guide atall times during their stay.
Many ofthose barriers to travel also act as barriers to communication.
When two governments disagreewith each other on important matters, they usually do not want their citizensto exchange news or ideas freely. Countries often try to keep military or industrialinformation secret.
Today, people have the ability to travel, to communicate, and to transport goods morequickly and easily than ever before. Natural barriers that were difficult ordangerous to cross a hundred years ago can now be crossed easily. The barriersthat people themselves make are not so easy to overcome. But in spite of allthe different kinds of barriers, people continue to enjoy travel and theexchange of goods and ideas.

Dear Peter,
I’m glad to receive your letter askingfor my advice on how to learn Chinese well.
Here are a few suggestions. First, it is important to take aChinese course, as you’ll be able
to learn from the teacher and practice with your fellowstudents. Then, it also helps to watch TV
and read books, newspapers and magazines in Chinese wheneverpossible.
Besides, it should be a good idea to learn and sing Chinesesongs, because by doing so you’ll learn and remember Chinese words more easily. You can also make more Chinese friends. They will tell you a lot about Chinaand help you learn Chinese.
Try and write me in Chinese next time.
Best wishes
