Winters are long andunforgiving in North Dakota. The winter of 1996 was especially brutal. It was adifficult time in my own life too. A neck injury had kept me flat in bed fornearly a year. "Just in time for Easter," my husband, Dick, said. Buthow could I feel the joy when the snow was four feet deep and I had months ofpainful physical treatment ahead?
I was doing the dishesone day, feeling hopeless when there was a tap against the glass. It was abranch of the troublesome cottonwood (棉白杨). Back in the fallof 1979, it was a new subdivision (细枝)then. The peoplewho’d briefly occupied the house before us had placed the pipe from the pumpnext to it. The earth was so wet that the poor thing had fallen down, most ofits bare root system pointing skyward, blowing hopelessly back and forth in thecold wind. Dick decided to pull it out one day, but I protested.
"Look at how hardit’s trying!" I said, pointing to the way it strongly kept hold of theearth. "It deserves a chance."
Dick borrowed sometools. We packed dry soil around the tree and put up some stakes (桩)into the ground, making it stand upright. That winter was still terrible.Surprisingly, in the spring my "rescue stick" put forth a few leaves, then with lots of branches. By the 1990s that little stick was a giant, towering over the house.
Now the tapping at thewindow continued, louder as the wind picked up, almost as though to tell me to lookup. At last, I did. I caught my breath. In the window against the icy blue sky, thousands and thousands of fresh red buds were waving in the wind.
The tree was burstingwith life and I had a wonderful Easter.

Do you ever pull your phone out of yourpocket, thinking it is vibrating (振动), only to find thatit isn’t?
This phenomenon, which scientists call "phantom (幻觉的) phone vibration", is very common. Around80% of people surveyed say they have imagined their phones vibrating when theywere actually still.
So, what leads to this universal behavior?According to the BBC, the explanation lies in your brain’s ability to discoversignals from the outside world.
When your phone is in your pocket, thereare two possible states: it is either vibrating or not. Meanwhile, you alsohave two possible states of mind: the judgment that the phone is vibrating, orthat it isn’t.
Ideally, you match the four statescorrectly. However, sometimes your brain decides that the consequences ofmissing a call are more serious than a "false alarm". Therefore, youbecome more sensitive to vibrations so that you don’t miss anything.
This is just like the fire alarm in yourhome—it can be annoying when it goes off in response to just a tiny bit ofsmoke. But that’s a small price to pay compared to a fire really breaking outbecause the alarm fails to alert you.
Now, you might still ask: why can’t ourbrains just make every judgment correctly without being too sensitive to falsesignals?
The answer is that your brain bears aheavy burden every day. "You get a large amount of sensory informationthat’s coming from your eyes, ears and skin, and you can’t deal with all thatinformation all the time," Michael Rothberg, a researcher at BaystateMedical Center in Springfield, US, told Live Science.
For example, the rustling (沙沙声)of clothing or the growling (咕咕声) of your stomach may both lead your brain tobelieve that they come from the vibration of your phone—it is like trying tohear your name being called in a noisy room.
So, perhaps you should just check yourphone whenever you think it’s vibrating. It’s not too much trouble to do that,is it?

30. According to MichaelRothberg, which is mainly responsible for phantom phone vibration?
A. A noisy background. B. Alack of much attention.
C. A heavy burden everyday. D. An overflow of sensoryinformation.

So many of us hold on to littlecomplaints that may have come from an argument, a misunderstanding, the way wewere raised, or some other painful event. Stubbornly, we wait for someone elseto reach out to us—believing this is the only way we can forgive or rekindlea friendship or family relationship.
A friend of mine, recently told me thatshe hadn’t spoken to her son in almost three years. She said that she and herson had had a disagreement about his wife and that she wouldn’t speak to himagain unless he called first. When I suggested that she be the one to reachout, she said, "I can’t do that. He’s the one who should apologize."After a little gentle encouragement, however, she did decide to be the firstone to reach out. To her amazement, her son was grateful for her willingness tocall and offered an apology of his own. As is usually the case when someonetakes the chance and reaches out, everyone wins.
Whenever we hold on to our anger, we turn"small stuff (问题)"into really "big stuff" in our minds. We start to believe that our positions are more important than ourhappiness. They are not. If you want to be a more peaceful person you mustunderstand that being right is almost never more important than allowingyourself to be happy. The way to be happy is to let go, and reach out. Letother people be right. This doesn’t meanthat you’re wrong. Everything will be fine. You’ll experience the peace ofletting go, as well as the joy of letting others be right.
You’ll also notice that, as you reach out and let others be "right", theywill become less defensive and more loving toward you. They might even reachback. But, if for some reason they don’t, that’s okay too. You’ll have theinner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your part to create a moreloving world, and certainly you’ll be more peaceful yourself.
32. The underlined word"rekindle" in Paragraph 1 probably means " ".
A. recover B. develop C. accept D. replace

A. let go of our own fights B.realize that you are wrong
C. expect others to give in D.apologize to others first
35. What would be thebest tide for the passage?
A. Be Peaceful B. Reach Out and Give C.Small and Big Stuff D. Enjoy YourFriendship

◆ It helps youreview all the lessons you’ve learned. By reviewing your journal, you canquickly see the lessons you’ve learned and the ideas you’ve gotten. 38 Youcan use the ideas to propel (鞭策)yourself forward.
◆ 39 After keeping a journal for years, you can lookback at it and see how far you’ve gone. Things that were big problems in thepast might seem small today. The raw ideas you had in the past might have been realized today.
◆ It helps youexpand your ideas. When you try to come up with a sentence to express an idea, you are thinking actively about it. 40 In the end, you will expand your ideas.
A. I often experiencedthat myself. B. It trains youto express your thoughts.
C. It allows you to seeyour progress over time.
D. Just use whatevertool you feel comfortable with.
E. Thinking activelyhelps you connect your idea to another idea.
F. And to be honest, Ican’t imagine what my life would be like without it.
